Which degree of hardness should I choose?

Anyone who gives you a general recommendation here has little idea about box spring beds. Unfortunately, degrees of hardness are not standardized, so that every box spring manufacturer can determine the classifications himself. However, if you ask about the weight recommendation, very clear limits can be defined. Before buying a box spring bed, always find out which body weight range the respective firmness is recommended for.

Use the following steps to determine the right degree of hardness:

  1. Ask for which body weight which degree of hardness is suitable. Get separate information for each model – the weight recommendation can vary for different box spring models depending on the manufacturer and system.
  2. Take your stature into account: If you are relatively short for your body weight, you should rather choose the next higher degree of hardness. If you are tall in relation to your weight, you may be too firmly on the recommended hardness level and should prefer the next lower level. In general, the following applies: Your body weight should not exceed the set weight limit too far, as this can lead to premature material fatigue and you “sag”.
  3. Try lying on the bed: In the end, you can only find out whether you are lying too tightly or too softly and you like the selected degree of hardness by trying it out on the box spring bed – or even better: try sleeping.

Which topper is right for me?

The topper is a thin layer of approx. 5-10 cm thickness that is placed on top of the mattress and gives the box spring bed feeling the finishing touch. While the mattress and the box ensure ergonomically correct storage, you can use the topper to adjust the desired lying sensation. Depending on the material, you sink in deeper and sleep particularly relieved of pressure or you lie on the surface with good support.

With the following questionnaire you can find out which topper suits you best:

Can I replace individual components such as mattresses and toppers at a later date or replace them completely?

In general, it is always possible to replace or replace individual components of a box spring bed. Depending on how long the period between the initial purchase and replacement is, it can happen that the original bed model is no longer manufactured and you have to switch to alternatives.

Why are the mattress and box in a double bed often in two parts, while the topper extends over the entire width?

Making the box and mattress in two parts offers clear advantages, especially when it comes to transport. Since the box is not in individual parts like a bed frame but is delivered completely assembled and delivered in one piece, it would hardly be maneuverable through a hallway or room doors. The same applies to the mattress. Since a spring core should be slightly curved but never kinked – the springs can be damaged in the process – considerable transport problems would also arise here. Split mattresses are also much more comfortable to use: regular turning and turning is much easier with two single mattresses.

The foam topper, on the other hand, can easily be rolled or folded for transport. If a continuous topper is placed on the mattress, you get a bed in the double bed without any annoying cracks for visitors.

Some box spring double beds have a continuous mattress: Does my bed side swing when my partner turns around?

Most of the time, continuous mattresses consist of two separate mattress cores that are combined in a common cover. Due to this “construction”, you get a continuous lying surface in terms of lying comfort, but the vibrations are not or only minimally transmitted from one innerspring to the other. Your side of the bed will therefore hardly resonate when your partner changes his sleeping position.

Do box spring beds need special care?

As in a normal bed with a slatted frame and mattress, the box spring mattress should also be turned and turned at regular intervals to distribute the load evenly. To ventilate it is advisable to occasionally take the mattress and topper from the box and let everything air out separately.

Depending on the nature of the box spring bed, the external care can be very different. Versions with fabric or artificial leather cover – like upholstered beds – are vacuumed or cleaned with a damp cloth if necessary. For models with a wooden frame or headboard, it is best to ask the relevant dealer about the best possible care.

Is a box spring bed also suitable for allergy sufferers?

People allergic to animal hair can sleep in a box spring bed without any problems, because normally no ingredients of animal origin are processed.

If you suffer from a house dust allergy, you should buy a box spring bed with a synthetic leather cover, as this can be wiped off with a damp cloth and mites cannot nest in the cover. Alternatively, a box spring insert system that can be placed in a normal bed frame, for example made of solid wood, is recommended. If required, the mattress and topper can also be equipped with a mite-proof mattress encasing.
