Chad is a Republic of North Central Africa, French Colony 1910-60. The first three decades after independence were marked by recurring droughts and long periods of civil war, especially between a black Christian population in the south and a lighter Muslim population in the north. It resulted in very limited economic development and the country became one of the world’s poorest countries. In 1993, large oil reserves were found in the southern part of the country; commercial oil extraction was initiated in 2003.
