Gabon is a Republic of the West Coast of Central Africa. Gabon was formerly a French colony and, after independence in 1960, the country has maintained close ties with France. The European interest in the area was initially limited to the possibility of reaching via the Gabon basin in the hinterland as well as the exploitation of the country’s tropical woods. Since then major oil finds have made Gabon the richest country in sub-Saharan Africa, measured as GDP per capita. At the same time, the country has again received more development aid, measured per. than any other country in the same region. The aid comes predominantly from France and reflects Gabon’s strategic importance: In addition to oil, the country has significant uranium reserves and the world’s sixth largest production of manganese.
