Gabon is a Republic of the West Coast of Central Africa. Gabon was formerly a French colony and, after independence in 1960, the country has maintained close ties with France. The European interest in the area was initially limited to the possibility of reaching via the Gabon basin in the hinterland as well as the exploitation of the country’s tropical woods.
