Malawi – education, The public school system, which is free and compulsory, includes an eight-year primary school for 6-14 year-olds, applied for approximately 50%. There are then two two-year levels, each of which ends with the exam. Higher education takes place at the University of Malawi in Lilongwe and at five other colleges. The aim is to reduce illiteracy among adults to approximately 30% in 2000 from approximately 41% in 1993.
