Mauritania is an Islamic Republic of West Africa. Most of the country incl. the long Atlantic coast is desert; only the southernmost parts of the country lie in the slightly wetter Sahel belt. The former French colony became independent in 1960. A number of dry years with disastrous consequences have since transformed Mauritania from nomadic to urban communities. In 1980, slavery was officially abolished, but many blacks still live in slave-like dependencies on the lighter Moorish population.
