Togo education, The French-language and free education system has in principle ten years of compulsory schooling for 5-14 year olds, but it is only fulfilled by approximately half of the students. The official language of instruction is French, but teaching is also in the local languages. About 60% of the adult population is illiterate (2006).

The six-year elementary school is followed by a four-year as well as a three-year superstructure. Higher education takes place at business schools and at the Université du Bénin, located in Lomé (Bay of Benin).
