The state of Ohio was occupied by the Iroquois when Frenchman Robert Cavelier da Sala explored it in 1670. Constituting the most direct road in Canada Louisiana, the French presence strengthened during the eighteenth and century, which however clashed rapidly with the territorial ambitions of the British present Virginia and Pennsylvania.

It is thus that 1754 Franco-Anglais rivals took the form of an armed conflict that ended the reddition of the French, with which the Indians had formed an alliance (Treaty of Paris of 1763). The latter, refusing to recognize English supremacy, revolted in 1763 (Pontiac rebellion). In 1783, the region was surrendered by Great Britain to the United States, and the first permanent colony founded in 1788 by Marietta. The Indians, uneasy about the growing number of pioneers, again rebellious but, beaten in 1795, were forced to surrender their rights over almost the entire territory (Greenville treaty).

Ohio became the seventeenth state of the American Union on March 1, 1803. Obtaining this state status favored its growth, both demographic – the population went from 45,400 inhabitants in 1800 to 700 in 1810 – as well as economic.

The invention and intensive use of the steamboat and the creation of the Érié channel (between Lake Érié and the Hudson River), which provided the State with a waterway to the Atlantic Ocean, inaugurated a period of prosperity for the State. At the end of the nineteenth century, Ohio was thus one of the most industrialized states in the Union. This economic “state of grace” was however hampered considerably by the great depression of the 1930s, however the production of military equipment during World War II , allowed for a start of economic correction. The industrial expansion then continued in the 1950s to the 1960s for free, namely through the Santo-Laurent sea route, which opened the ports of Lake Érié to international trade. However, since the 1990s, Ohio is facing a serious industrial crisis and must face the challenges of capital economic conversion for the state’s future.

Ohio State University in Columbus
The Ohio State University in the city of Columbus is the university with the largest contiguous campus in the entire United States. The main campus of Ohio State University is in Columbus, but Ohio State University also has secondary campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion and Newark. A total of approximately 64,000 students study at Ohio State University, 57,000 of them in Columbus alone.

Case Western Reserve University
The private Case Western Reserve University, in the city of Cleveland, was founded in 1967 and is now one of the best universities in Ohio. Case Western Reserve University is also a member of the Association of American Universities, an association of research-intensive North American universities. The university campus is located in the University Circle district and is therefore in close proximity to numerous cultural institutions. Case Western Reserve University has produced numerous later Nobel Prize winners, including 8 Nobel Prizes in Medicine for former university students. Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware
The private Ohio Wesleyan University in the city of Delaware was founded in 1842 and is one of the most respected universities in the world. The campus of the, with only about 2,000 rather small university, extends over more than 800,000 m² and offers many historical buildings in the neo-Gothic style.

Cleveland State University
Cleveland State University in the city of Cleveland was founded in 1870 and now has approximately 17,000 students. Cleveland State University has a very large law school. Shuvo Roy, the inventor of the artificial kidney, also studied at Cleveland State University.

University of Cincinnati
The state University of Cincinnati in the city of Cincinnati was founded in 1819 and today has over 40,000 students, making it one of the largest universities in Ohio. The Faculty of Music (College Conservatory of Music Cincinnati) earned a special reputation. It is one of the best music colleges in the United States. One of the professors at the University of Cincinnati is Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon.

Kent State University
Kent State University in the city of Kent was founded in 1910 and is now the third largest university in Ohio with over 40,000 students. The main campus is in the city of Kent, but the university also has other locations in Ashtabula, East Liverpool, Geauga, Salem, Stark, Trumbull and Tuscarawas. Kent State University achieved notoriety through the so-called Kent State Massacre, in which 4 students died in 1970. These died from the shelling of the National Guard, which was supposed to end the student protest against the Vietnam War.
