The state of Oklahoma was explored by the Spaniards Francisco Vásquez Coronado, in 1541, and Dom Diego del Castillo, in 1650. In 1682, it was incorporated by Robert Cavelier of the French Louisiana Room. Traveled by French merchants and trappers through the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, it was sold in 1803, with Louisiana, to the United States; numerous American explorers then quickly became over the place, and military posts were created: Fort Smith 1817, Fort Gibson in 1824.
In 1817, the federal government undertook to heavily relocate Indian populations from Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Mississippi to Oklahoma. This became, in 1819, the territory of the “Five Nations”, composed of the Creeks, the Cherokees, the Chickasaws, the Choctaws and the Séminoles. In 1834, Congress proclaimed the Indian reserve region, guaranteeing right there by the Indian authority over the territory. During the Secession war, the Oklahoma Indians, whose very own slaves, took sides on the southern Confederation; however, at the end of the conflict, they had to surrender the western half of their territory to the United States in order to welcome new tribes. Vastos were then uninhabited and, despite a law prohibiting whites from settling on these lands, several communities drew up colonization plans.
That is why President Rutherford B. Irradiar proclaimed, in 1879 and 1880, prohibitions of implantation on the territory, causing the multiplication of the demonstrations in favor of the opening of the lands of Oklahoma to the Whites. In 1885, the American Congress authorized the president to start negotiations with the Creeks and the Seminoles to allow settlers to access the uninhabited plots.

The State University of Oklahoma in the city of Norman, near the city of Oklahoma City, was founded in 1890 and is now the largest university in Oklahoma with around 31,000 students. In addition to the Norman campus, there are 2 other campuses in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
