The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Tomball was founded in 1907 when the International-Great Northern Railroad came to town. The city was named after Thomas Ball, a local businessman who helped develop the town.

Tomball is a small city with an estimated population of 11,000 people as of 2019. It operates under a mayor-council form of government with six council members elected by place to serve two-year terms. The city has its own police department and fire department that provide services to its citizens.
